Work Sketches!

Inspired by my pal, Brad's "Weird Sketch Wednesdays" (featured on his blog, bybradcampbell.blogspot.com) here are some sketches I've accumulated at work lately. I tend to start sketching when I'm in staff meetings or on the phone. I rarely plan what to draw, I just start drawing and see what shows up. I like 'em. Hope you do too.

The Best. The Strongest. The Most Powerful.

I started this sketch because I just wanted to see Wolverine and He-Man in drawing together. Once I finished their positions in the rough sketching stage I noticed how much bigger He-Man was than Logan (as it should be), and I thought it would be cool to put someone even bigger than He-Man behind them both. The Hulk seemed like a good pick. Once I finished penciling and inking it I brought it into photoshop and proceeded to add more textures, colors, shadows, highlights, and backgrounds than I have used in any one drawing in years. I think it turned out pretty well, with nice depth and atmosphere. Overall, I'm pretty proud of this one.
BTW, in case you don't speak "fanboy", the title of this illustration stands for the slogans of each of these characters. Wolverine is "The best there is at what he does (and what he does isn't nice)", Hulk is "The strongest one there is", & He-Man is "The most powerful man in the universe".

Hair Club for Villains

Sorry it's been 5 weeks since my last post. We've had a baby in the past month! I think I get a break for that, right?
Anywho, I wanted to draw an illustration with villains interacting, and once I decided I wanted Red Skull and Skeletor to be involved, the bald jokes started coming and wouldn't stop. Thus, I'm proud to present the Hair Club for Villains! For those who don't recognize the founding members, they are (from bottom left and going clockwise); Skeletor, Kingpin, Red Skull, Mr. Burns, & Lex Luthor. Skeletor looks so happy. Maybe all he really needed all these years was a nice hair piece, not the Power of Grayskull like he always claimed. Sounds like a self-esteem problem to me.

Robot Attack!!!

As an effort to further decorate my soon-to-be-born son's room I bought 4 chunky, blank plastic paint-them-yourself figures. We're going with a robot theme for his room, so I planned on painting all four robots. Instead of doing them all myself and having them look just like the paintings and poster I've already done for his room, I asked 3 of my artist friends to decorate one robot each. That way each one will have a unique look AND he'll have a special "birthday gift" from 3 of my friends. Above are pictures of the one I painted last night. I had to stop by Lowe's after work to get his "ears" though.

Fall Returns

About 4 years ago I was commissioned by our friend, Shyla, to paint a fall tree painting for her house. It turned out so well that Shelley said she wanted one. Well...I finally got around to it last week. I've named this painting "Fall Returns" since it's the second painting like this I have created now. It's hanging over our couch and the vivid colors really livened up the whole room. I'm pleased with this one.
